Getting to know ASPROFOS

ASPROFOS S.A., the largest and leading engineering firm in Greece, is a wholly owned subsidiary of HELLENIC PETROLEUM GROUP (www.hellenic-petroleum.gr). Its presence in the Greek market provides an added value element to Hellenic Petroleum and integrates the activities of the group in the petroleum sector. Indirectly, ASPROFOS constitutes the driving motor to numerous Greek construction companies and equipment manufactures, promoting their existence in the heavy industry sector and strengthening the domestic market.

ASPROFOS was established in April 1983 following an agreement between Hellenic Aspropyrgos Refinery (ELDA) and Foster Wheeler Italiana (FWI) to form a joint venture on a 51:49 share basis, aiming at tackling a 500 million dollar state of the art upgrading and expansion expenditure within the state-owned Hellenic Aspropyrgos Refinery, and to provide for the first time in the Greek industrial history, through a home office establishment, full engineering design, project management, procurement of materials, as well as construction supervision services, in a multi task effort to maximize all available resources of the country.

In 1988, with the ELDA upgrading project already completed and the refining activities properly on strem, Foster Wheeler Italiana retracted its shares and ASPROFOS became a fully owned subsidiary of ELDA. As an independent company, operating in accordance with internationally acceptable standards and practices, a valuable inheritance attributed to the close and uninterrupted cooperation of experienced FWI professionals and Greek engineers, ASPROFOS expanded its scope of activities and established a solid reputation and fame. The time had thus arrived for ASPROFOS to broaden its activities into the sector of liquefied natural gas storage and natural gas network construction and transfer, a major grassroots infrastructure expenditure in Greece, which boosted ASPROFOS to expand further, as of 1989.
